"Captain" The ensign spoke hesitantly, almost as if hoping no one would answer. "Captain we may have a problem". Not waiting for an answer the ensign continued his narration "y'know you had me inventorying the port stores, well, there are some kinda worrying discrepancies".
"Well you'd best see for yourself, here is a list of what is missing"
With that he proffers a dataslab it's liquid crystal display screen beaming a cheerful little list.
Missing items:
20kg carbon deposit 16.5 litres of water 8 emergancy meals 1 blanket 3 pints of blood plasm 2 stimpacs 13 yards of medical bandage 1 medical diagnostic unit 3 analgesics one gene scanning kit one warp core calibrator one tricorder memory unit one weapon discharge energy unit.
"Umm the last 50 day inventory shows all items present sir". "what should I do sir?" The ensign looks at you pleadingly.

Captain Pennington gave the ensign a grave look.
"Ensign these are some serious items to just 'go missing'".
She tapped her combadge. =/\=This is the Captain speaking. There is to be no transportation on or off of the ship until further notice. Pennington out.=/\=
"I want you to send a list of everyone who was working with these items in the passed 50 days on to Nao'po at Security as soon as possible. I'll have a security team sent to each department that items were taken from."
She tapped her badge again. =/\=Number one, we have a serious list of items going 'missing'. Some of them could even suggest at desserter at worse. Move to yellow alert and keep me informed. Pennington out. =/\=

"Aye, Captain."
Missing items? Gunning's eyebrows rose in thought as she followed her Captain's commands. A deserter was unlikely, yet not improbable. Best to keep an eye on things untill they could be completely sure.

Throughout the rest of the day junior officers and ratings trickled into security posts to report having used or inventoried the missing goods. Ultimately though the security staff were left scratching their heads. All duty logs show equipment returned and bulkhead security logs show no crew opened the heavy blast doors into the port stores. However, the number of times the motion detectors in the door does not tally. There are an additional 16 door openings more than there are security swipes in the last 14 days. The level of access required to open or shut the bulkheads remotely is normally restricted to the active command console, or at higher alert levels, opened up to fire control and security teams. All such overrides are logged and none are on record. The dry conclusions set out in the data report are that someone has system backbone level access to the ship's systems and has chosen to use the access to steal a relatively large volume of generally low value goods.
This report stares at you from the bridge data display, a clear and open indication that ship security is compromised by person or persons unknown for mysterious purposes.
