Beck huddled over twenty-eight different cylinders, each filled with fifty milliliters of soil and twenty of water. There were two of each soil samples from fourteen different planets the Enterprise team had been to, each one had simulated weather temperatures. After studying the different soil types and finding only 6 were actually good for plants and animals, she tested to see what kinds of bacteria grew in them. So far about four out of fourteen were good for Earth-like crops. That was four planets that stable colonies could form on. However, that got brought down to three when she realized that one of them was the tree's planet. These three seemed to have soil-enriching animals sort of like Earth's worms. They would eat old plant and animal parts and produce fresh soil for more plants.
Beck had logged a description and various information about each of the fertile soils over two months of examination, with the exception of two new ones which were only weeks old. Though this experiment seemed completely pointless, Beck had a feeling it would one day contribute something to the United Federation of Planets.
......Not for real, she just thought that sounded pretty sweet, so she'd keep it in mind.
