Pennington quickly experienced resistance in the maintenance shafts, she was forced to change paths and make due with the phaser she had until she finally made it to Engineering.
After what felt like an hour she dropped from the tunnel into Engineering. Her gaze swept the room, fallen borg, engineers, and equipment were scattered along the floor, but what immediately caught her eyes was a Romulan with Gunning pinned against a console. "Gunning!!" She immediately shot him, but when he slid out of the way, Gunning's expression was NOT what she had expected.

Khev's groan was not the groan Gunning expected. He collapsed.

"Khev!" Gunning shrieked, falling to her knees with Khev in her arms. "What the bloody hell was that for?!" she screeched at Pennington, trying to shove her skirt back into place, face red with anger, embarrassment and a touch of the passion from moments before. She held Khev close, trying to wake him, but he might as well have been dead for the moment. The captain had hit him good.

Q appeared. "Something wrong?" he asked mildly. The trouble was, only Pennington could see him. He seemed to be looking at the fallen Romulan. "Pity. That was the one that caused your death - and saved your precious crew." Meanwhile, the Romulan Commander, T'Rehu Dharvanek, "awoke". Now the stun had worn off, she unleashed her concealed feringi whip and used it to smash the aquarium - and the spock-fish. The only spock-fish in all reality; unique and utterly irreplaceable. They all died, gasping for air. Then the enraged Romulan commander smashed the posters, and left burn marks on the wall. And then proceeded to hack into Pennington's computer, and in a show of spite, downloaded kirk-spock-tribble porn onto it.

"I had it on stun damnit!" She yelled at the invisible Q.
"I thought...he was attacking you..." Humiliation and confusion rushed over her. What on earth was her First Officer doing pressed against a console by a Romulan...not that she was one to talk but this was her first officer!!! And he was the one who saved her ship? What on earth?! She sighed and drew up a tricorder, she had served as a Medical officer for ten years.
"He'll be fine, it was only set on stun." She reached into one of the pockets at her waist and injected him with a hypo of stimulant.

"Interesting." Q observed, following Pennington and looking over her shoulder, "And you did set it on stun. Still, to shoot the ally that saved your ship..." He shook his head, "And to think I took you off the Borg ship. Did you know he saved everyone in here, single-handedly taking on the Borg and rerouting your ship's power?"
Guilt trip much?
"And you shoot him? You mortals... always so interesting."

Gunning continued to fix Pennington with an annoyed look. "But the fact remains that you shot him!" she hissed, trying to be quiet as the blush rose in her cheeks, holding Khev to her breast protectively. "We were in the middle of something! Why did you shoot?! I didn't even get to make the face!"

Pennington continued the medical scan.
"Try and look at it from my perspective." She said, watching his marks stabilize.
"I had just fought my way to Engineering, and the first thing I see is a Romulan pressing my First Officer into a console. What action would you suggest given the circumstances?"
---
Verity finished manually locking the leaking valve and scanned the air again. She tapped her combadge. "Lieutenant Commander Davis, I have repaired the radiation leak and I'm moving on to double checking the structural stability.

"Oh, oh, I know!" Q stuck his hand up patronisingly, "Maybe... talk to him? Ask questions first, shoot later?
"...Or... join in. No? Then perhaps give them some privacy?" He rolled his eyes, "But noooo, you're a Starfleet Officer. You have to be all 'moral', and 'save the day', and 'fire on your allies'. Oops?
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Whatever would Picard say? Oh, I know." His voice deepened, "'Not on my ship, Number One.'"

Gunning just snorted, rubbing Khev's chest soothingly, waiting for him to wake. "He's the one who helped us destroy that borg cube... and..." she hesitated, looking away from the captain almost shyly. "I... was going to ask you if it would be possible to keep him around after all this is said and done. He's a brilliant engineer, and could be very useful to me..." The was a hint of affection in her voice, and she smiled up at Pennington in embarrassment.

Pennington eased down into a sitting position beside them. "So I heard...well," She awkwardly corrected. "I had guessed by your reaction. Anyway..." She sighed, looking at the two of them. "I suppose...an excellent Engineer is always useful, but we have Verity and John...and Romulans...are very, very loyal to their Empire...and there's no way of being sure that he won't betray us." The look on her face brought so many memories back. "But, if you can give him really little jobs, until he's proven himself-"

. Right in the middle of Pennington's speech, John yelled out, "Disaster! The Borg cube is going to ram us! Red Alert!" Sirens roared, and John worked furiously to get the warp drive back online. He heard Stevey hit the floor. Ignoring it, he lit up when the warp drive finally came on. "AND WE HAVE IT! Awaiting orders captain!" John said intensely.
. Warner fanned an unconscious Stevey. . "Take us into Warp Mr. Davis!!" Pennington ordered, she had already sprung to her feet.
. John initiated warp and they barely dodged the speeding Borg ship. Soon, they were out of it's range. "OH YEAH. That was so cool. I need to congratulate myself, like really. But first..." John looked at the twitching Stevey. He took Stevey in his arms and kissed him on the lips.
. The normally terrified, awkward Stevey awoke with a start and blushed like crazy, now giggling. "Oh John!" He waved a hand girlishly, but then hugged John around the neck and said nothing more.
. John looked at the Captain, "I think we're safe now."

"So what now, captain?" Q asked, eyeing the still unconscious distastefully. "You know they can never go back. Oh, you'll figure out what's happened soon enough, but now you have fugitives. I'll tell you this for free; their ship will continue after you... if those Borg don't get them first. It's really quite sweet actually; 'are you lonely'? What mortal isn't? How different it would have been if you had just accepted their offer. Still... everything seems back to normal, for now. Doesn't it?"
Q paused, and wrinkled his lips, "Except for those Cardassians, and the Ferengi, and the assimilated planet - at least that plague's cured. So you succeeded in your mission at least. I wonder how Starfleet will receive this unorthodox solution. Oh, and one last thing before I leave Captain.
"It would be better not to mention me in those reports." His smile was grim, but also darkly amused, "it wouldn't look good for you and I to be too closely associated; it will put a stunt in your promotion." He cast a critical eye around, "So much mess for you to clear up. And you still never asked for help. Still, you can always call. Perhaps I'll even answer."
He smiled, and it was warm, "Too bad about those fish. You would have made a great impression back on earth. Oh, and watch out for those teleporters; I suggest you modulate your frequencies. You haven't seen the last of your new lonely friends." Then he leaned in and kissed her, "Until next time, Captain."
Then he snapped his fingers, and the ship suddenly found itself several light years beyond where it should have been, far beyond where the Romulans - or Borg - could catch them. A parting gift from Q, perhaps? Oddly enough, it wasn't logged in the ships' records or sensors.

Warp speed?
Gunning blinked down at Khev, wondering how many romulans they had just kidnapped. Or borg for that matter... She smirked slightly with the realization that she would get to keep her beloved rommy just a little longer, then felt ridiculous over being happy about kidnapping of all things.
Stroking Kveh's hair affectionately, she leaned down to kiss him, hoping to wake him pleasantly. Goodness knows the rest of the news from that moment on would be unhappy, why not give the poor dear something nice to start off with?
